Photoblogging the 'hood
So far I've managed to photoblog every neighborhood I've visited but haven't chosen, other than to capture Dick Whittington's cat. Now it's time to introduce our readers to Highgate and Archway.
Starting at the foot of the hill, we have Archway, home to the Archway Tube station and a bit of a commercially strip ...
At the Archway Tavern ...
... it's always Guinness Time.
Walking up the hill toward Highgate, you may find yourself asking, "Do they like playing up the Dick Whittington legend here?
Yup.
Yes, indeedy-do.
Anyway, photos usually do a terrible job of capturing the slope of hills, so why don't I get a shot of the houses that front Highgate Hill Road?
Each one a couple of feet higher than the next.
Here is our church, the Church of St. Joseph.
Not only is it a half-block from our flat, so we can roll out of bed at quarter 'til mass and still make it on time; not only does it have a Losers' Last Chance Mass at 7:30 p.m. on Sundays; not only does it have a Polish mass; not only does it have an Irish night ...
... but they make sure they don't exclude the Cockneys.
Farther up the hill, we reach the Channing School, perhaps part of England's strong tradition of private schools that are called public schools.
As Highgate Hill Road transforms (at some unclear point) into Highgate High Street, one of the first businesses you encounter is ...
(Fruiterer? How about fruiter?)
Wow, there are a lot of used book stores in this country ...
But even more pubs. There's the Angel Inn ...
... and a few steps uphill, the Prince of Wales ...
... and at the top, the Gatehouse.
But wait! The Gatehouse isn't just about drinking.
You can see a play there, too.
Highgate is the sort of place that would have the entree and dessert in adjoining stores.
And finally, it's my office away from the office, mostly because they have an internet hot spot ...
... and it's not a Starbucks.
Highgate would best be described as quaint--like a Maine shore town. I like it because it's slower paced than Central London without being sleepy or remote.

Great pictures! That's a nice introduction to your neighborhood. I can't wait for pictures (inside and outside) of your flat.
