It's bright because of the sun! You are, after all, in sunny California now, as opposed to gloomy, dismal London in winter.

You mean, you'd forgotten how bright and loud California can be. The rest of America isn't that bright and usually isn't that loud.
P.S. Your puzzlement about the Illini being in the NCAA tourney was well placed.
Fair enough. The Illini choked spectacularly. I managed to catch the last 60 seconds in the hotel bar.
