Maybe it's because the manpurse and the earring, and not your accent.
Seriously, when Stephanie and I were in London, on at least one occasion we had to explain to the locals that not every American marches in lockstep with George W. Bush. If I were in Europe, I think I'd take to wearing a maple-leaf toque and carrying a Molson's bottle everywhere. (Not really, but I'd be tempted.)
