The connection on this one is a bit obscure, but readers of this blog, and perhaps Big Dead Place, might be able to make the connection.
An American Couple Expatriated To London ("It's not my fault! The liquor drunkened me!")

I know Middle Kid was here, and this is her favorite game. Let's have your guesses!
(I have a clue, but it might be a dead giveaway.)
It's obviously about an explorer of frozen places who had scurvy. How many more hints does a person need? Mr. OK says it's Leif Erickson, but I think he's wrong.
I have to say I don't really know who the statue is -- some Antarctic explorer, I think. I went to the website Smitty mentioned and I'm still trying to recover from this particular line," . . .their spongy gums still bleeding from the scurvy . . ." Maybe the statue is Shackleton??? Schmutz, you're up!!
So, are we going to get an more hints, Smitty? Lots of explorers ended up with scurvy, especially the ones who didn't eat their sauerkraut (which is also supposedly helpful in preventing bird flu).
I did just recently read an article about Vitus Bering and how he and his crew ended up with scurvy as they tried to establish contact across the now named Bering Straits. Poor Vitus died.
Mmmmm! Sauerkraut!
OK, this same photo (the statue) has been elsewhere in this blog with the explorer's actual name.
Somebody's close, although I'm not going to say who ....
I hope it's not Mr. OK who is close, since I told him that no way was it Leif Erikson.
So is Leif Erikson your final guess? Since we're close, and I gave a pretty specific clue, I'm gonna have to demand a very specific answer.
I know, it's John Wesley!
Ok, ok, it's Robert Scott, not Leif Erickson (what a relief)
OK, but you won by virtue of being here first today ...
Whatever it takes. It's not my fault if MK and Schmutz slept in!
Hey! It's 6:45 a.m. here, right now. I didn't exactly "sleep in." Did Robert Scott have bleeding, spongy gums?
When they thawed out his body, yeah, he probably did.
Next week I'll wait for MK to get up. The only problem is that by the time she gets up, I'll be at work, and unable to spend time blogging! I can probably check in at lunch time and solve the puzzle, if she hasn't figured it out yet.
Oh, O.K., I don't mind if you do the FAT. I just don't want to be known as a lazy person!! It looks as though you have a couple of hours on me, time zone-wise.
I never said you were a lazy person. I was reacting to Smitty's comment that I only won because I got there first!
That wasn't very fair, was it?
