Words I thought were cute English expressions until I moved here and found out they were rude:

Bloody
Wanker
Tosser

Let's see:

Bloody--don't know, but we have a teacher friend here who shocked her kids when she used it.

Wanker, tosser: Words for onanist.

Sod: Short for a sodomy.

Bollocks: Male naughty bits.

Who would have thought that the Sex Pistols would use a rude word?

I have a book by your fellow blogger, Expatmum, that describes many ways an American can embarrass him/herself in England. It's a fun and enlightening read.

This is Mrs. W and I had to chime in -- bloody means g-ddamn. And sod really isn't THAT bad. If you say "sod it", it's much more acceptable than (fill in the blank) it. It's kind of like saying "screw it" in the US, which while it still isn't nice, isn't that offensive to most folks. Sod, like its ruder cousin, is a very all-purpose word. "Where's that sodding remote?" "Where the sod have you been?" I could go on but I won't.
