Another great neighbor
This morning, running through the Kenwood Estate in Hampstead Heath, I learned that singer-actor Paul Robeson lived nearby, in Hampstead, (one neighborhood over), somewhere on this street.
Now there are those who have suggested that we are not fair and balanced. Given Paul Robeson's controversial history of being blackballed as a supposed socialist sympathizer, it may once again be suggested that we are not being fair and balanced. So, in the interest of being fair and balanced, let us remember the snitch whose testimony helped to deny America the great talents of so many like Paul Robeson for so long.
Yeah, that feels better.

I suppose we can read a paean to Alger Hiss next.
Did he live in Hampstead, too?
Maybe he's buried next to Marx. But at least Marx was honest about his ideology.
Hmmm. A Google search using the term "alger hiss london" turned up this bit:
September 9, 2003 - Longtime Hiss supporter John Lowenthal, an attorney and law professor who made the acclaimed documentary film, "The Trials of Alger Hiss," died in London on September 9 at the age of 78.
I think that's the closest we're going to get on Alger Hiss in London.
Oh well. Daniel Defoe is cooler anyway.
There was a BBC radio programme some years ago devoted to Robeson's performance on behalf of the Welsh miners. You won't find a bad word said about Robeson in Britain from those who've heard of him, I promise.
Dear God, there's some wingnut filth polluting that Wikipedia entry on Robeson. And the comments here, too, alas, judging from 'juan karr'.
It's OK. Gary's a friend.
Shame on Bonzo for testifying against Paul Robeson! Bad, BAD Bonzo! No bananas for you! ):-P
